What's in a name ?

some people just insist on making your life so much fun by just randomly existing.. A friend recently was sharing the quirks of working in the IT industry and what he shared was supremely funny .. here's what happened..

Apparently,my friend(lets call him S) was put on a project in which he was having to interact with someone onsite (US, i think) ..Our man, S brushes up on his accent and desperately tries to acquire one thinking that he had to somehow impress this guy with a heavy accent ,who called himself Sammy. They interact on a daily basis and one day S really wants to know who Sammy is .. He checks in outlook ,but doesnt find anyone with that name.. finally,he asks another collegue based onsite and gets to know that our Sammy is none other than .. Mr. Maadasaamy from Luz corner !!! ..

I couldnt stop laughing when i heard this .. Someone else also told me that a collegue of his named Jagan Diwakar preferred to be called James D'walker .. how ingenius and fake !! ..ok one more .. Krishnamachari Varada into Kris Var !! haa haa ..Folks, i am sure each one knows atleast another such item .. plss share !!!

And one another thing .. doesnt maadasaamy sound like a milkman's name ??

For our first play we did this research and got so many names. Vijayswamy - VJSam, Srivatsan - S'watson[incidentally there is a guitar teacher in adyar who was a srivatsan n bcame watson..iyengar who converted to christianity], Sandy[sandhyalakshmi],Murgi[Murugesan], Param[Paramasivam]...the list wud go on and on.

yup, we have this issue too. my ex boss Vijay became VJ and present boss Krishna Kumar became Kris. As far as I know, Americans dont have a problem calling us by our names. They call me Veemal, but I dont mind, atleast thats somehow related to my name!

@ Vinod : Murgi?????seriously???? LOL

Never came across, but generally I have found all the Sandeep's want themselves to be called as Sandy
"S" would be feeling pissed off :)

I find it so irritating - fake accents, and name changing. Reminds me of that movie 'Namesake'. It somehow shows that people aren't happy with the way they are.. so sad no ?

avdi.. harry is a very common name !! i know a harkirat who calls himself harry.. i am ok with this in the informal context.. but people assuming an anglicised name at work is highly pretentious

Vinod..s'watson, seriously ?? wow!! but, if he has converted, there is nothing wrong.. he would obviously want to take a christian name !.. murgi takes the cake !!

I think the people who fake such names are insecure and not confident of themselves.

Hi,
Thanks for dropping by...BTW even I had inetracted with one Prady in my earlier job who was full of this firangi accent, only to know later during one if his visits in India that Prady ji is actually "Pradyuman Mishra" from "Allahabad" orginally :D

This is a hilarious post, Bedazzled. I'll leave talking about Padmanabhans who became Paddys to others and hand you my source of amusement.

Some people pronounce their own names with an anglicised lilt. That cracks me up. Sarala introduces herself Saraaala; Vasanti says her name as Va-san(a la san in sanction)-ti(a la tea); Vamsi becomes Vam(a la vampire)-sea.

Even funnier is that after the anglicised version of their name rolls off their tongues, it is invariable followed by a sentence which contains the word 'Vaat'

I dont have any examples, but since I am based in the US, I am always dying to ask the person on the other side of the phone what his/her real name is, but I stop myself. :)

funny yet true.

people change their names totally as they don't want others to mispronounce it. or is it they feel ashamed to sound Indian

VBR.. nice !.. echo u r thoughts !

smita.. thanks as usual ..;-)

Divya.. hee hee ,yeah ..shepherd is a project manager !

Renu.. i really dont know whether they r insecure or anything .. everyone wants to fit in .. but this is extreme.. so mayb like u say they lack confidence

kanupriya.. hee hee ..good one !

chillpill.. i guess a lot of people who stay in abroad and interact quite a bit with firangs over a longish period tend to anglicize their names..good ones ! sarala was cool !

Joe.. i thot u took names that sounded similar to the real name .. if u r organisation chooses to anglicise names, there is not much that can be done !..

BB..dont remember. I saw it long long ago !! .. welcome here !

Bedazzled said...

SSquo.. i think u shud the next time.. most of the people who talk to you wud want to tell them their real names , but their organisations require them to become peters and Annas ..

Eisi.. Danks !

Oorjas.. bang on , babe! .. ashamed of sounding indian.. !!
